Städte sind mehr als die Summe statischer Architekturen: Die Stadt entsteht performativ als Resultat von sozialen Prozessen und öffentlichen Aktionen. Von dieser Prämisse ausgehend fokussiert „Performing the City“ Städte in Asien, Europa und Amerika und reflektiert erstmals in einem ausholenden Überblick das Verhältnis von performativer Kunst und Stadt. Dabei steht der performative Urbanismus der 60er und 70er Jahre im Zentrum. Unter institutions- und gesellschaftskritischen Vorzeichen begaben sich Künstler/innen auf die Straße als Ort leibhaftiger und idealiter demokratischer Öffentlichkeit. Getragen von der avantgardistischen Utopie einer Versöhnung von „Kunst und Leben“ setzten sie anstelle des Objektcharakters der Kunst die Personen gebundene Aktion. Dabei eröffnete sich ein Spektrum von konzeptualistischer und Körper betont aktionistischer, von spielerisch interventionistischer und dezidiert politischer Kunst. Mit Happenings, Aktionen, Performances und Interventionen setzt sich der performative Urbanismus über nationale und kontinentale Grenzen hinweg und äußert sich doch von Stadt zu Stadt verschieden. Er ereignet sich in einem Klima des gesellschaftlichen Aufbruchs und verbindet sich immer wieder mit den emanzipatorischen Bewegungen der 60er und 70er Jahre, die in Überwindung traditioneller Hierarchien, gesellschaftlicher Erstarrungen und politischer Repressionen auf eine Demokratisierung der Gesellschaft zielen.
Even though the city is normally considered to be the sum total of static architectural structures, the premise of “Performing the City” is that the city develops performatively as a result of public actions and social processes. This assumption allows urban protagonists and their activities to become the centre of attention. “Performing the City” focuses on cities in Asia, Europe and America, reflecting for the first time in a comprehensive, international survey on the relation of performative art and the city. Performative urbanism of the 1960s and 1970s is in the centre of attention. Intentionally critical towards institutions and society, artists went onto the streets, the very place which personifies an idealized democratic public realm. With the help of the avantgardes’ utopian vision of the reconciliation of “Art and Life”, they put body-related actions in the place of object-based art. This opened up a spectrum of art, ranging from conceptual and body-related “actions”, to playful interventions and decidedly political directions.

Das von dem Münchner Kunsttheoretiker Heinz Schütz kuratierte Projekt schlägt eine Brücke von Asien über Europa nach Amerika und richtet den Blick über die Kunstzentren hinaus auch auf Städte, die gewöhnlich an die kunsthistorische Peripherie gedrängt werden. Vorgestellt werden Aktivitäten im Stadtraum von Tokio, Seoul, Moskau, Ljubljana, Neapel, München, Berlin, Paris, São Paulo, New York und Mexico City. „Performing the City“ leistet einen Beitrag zur globalen Geschichte performativer Kunst, zur Kunst-im-öffentlichen-Raum-Debatte und zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kritizismus und Utopismus der 60er und 70er Jahre. Die Ausstellung in der Lothringer13 dokumentiert die Aktionen im Rahmen einer Soundinstallation mit eigens entworfenen Stadt-Atlanten, mit Videointerviews und Künstlerfilmen aus den 60er und 70er Jahren. Die grafische Gestaltung der Ausstellung stammt von Richard Ferkl, die Soundinstallation von Alcuin Ai, die Filmbearbeitung von Michal Kosakowski und von Zinaida Starodubtseva/Oleg Beloglazov für Moskau.
Through happenings, actions, performances and interventions the performative urbanism defies national and continental boundaries expressed in different ways in each city. It takes place within a climate of social uprise and joins again and again with the emancipatory movements of the 60s and 70s, aiming at a democratization of society through overcoming traditional hierarchies, social consolidation and political repression. “Peforming the City” makes a contribution to the global history of performative art, to the debate on public art and to the debate on the criticism and utopism of the 60s and 70s. In the exhibition at the Lothringer13 the documentation of the activities is presented as city atlases, set within a sound installation and accompanied by video interviews and artists’ films of the 60s and 70s. The graphic design is created by Richard Ferkl, the sound installation by Alcuin Ai, the videos are edited by Michal Kosakowski with Moscow interviews edited by Zinaida Starodubtseva/Oleg Beloglazov.
